I'm sorry that I don't have an answer to your question, but one statement
you made indicates that you might have an answer for mine:

Does that mean that you are able to display back X programs from a system
that is reachable only on port 22?  Can you please point me to a tutorial
or a book that explains how to do that?

I can run remote X, but doing so over ssh escapes me, so far.
