That's generally good advice since Samba does a much better job of helping UNIX/Linux systems support Windows' native mode than NFS clients help Windows support that of UNIX/Linux. > I am using a VPN and need to have an external windows XP machine mount > drives on an internal Redhat Linux box. Which shouldn't be an insurmountable problem but is a good reason to reconsider the possibility of NFS. In my experience, some Windows applications will have trouble with NFS if they rely on file locking mechanisms or pay particular attention to file/directory ownership and privileges for their operation. But if you're just looking for a simple file share you should be fine. Googling for "NFS client for windows" should bring you loads of choices...throw in the word "free" if that's what you're looking for. I've used the products offered at labf.com with good results before, and while I have not tried their NFS client I do recall that they offer one: http://www.labf.com/nfsaxe/index.html .
