Subj : Re: best distro for an older computer To : comp.os.linux From : Mike Date : Wed Dec 08 2004 06:37 pm Thank you to everyone who replied to this post from about 1-2 months ago. I wasn't able to read it until yesterday and I would like to say thanks to all who responded with the helpful suggestions. Based on many of the suggestions it would appear there is much hope of running a version of Linux on my older computer: ASI Pro Pentium x86 Family 5 Model 2 stepping 12 Genuine Intel 132 Megahertz AT/AT Compatible 32 MB ram 1.5 Gig hard drive I will probably first try Slackware and also I might consider adding some more RAM to this computer, maybe increasing it from 32 to 64 MB of RAM. I might try Open Office but it looks like I might have better luck with Applix office suite or Star Office or Abiword. Other distros commonly suggested to me for systems with low amounts of RAM were: Debian and Vector Mutt or Pine would be appropriate email clients. For web browsing I might consider Lynx. I might also try firefox for web browsing but it may not work well on my system with such little RAM. Thanks for all the advice. Now I have a direction to take. Thanks! -- Mike .
