You might also want to look into reoback. Someone on one of these newsgroups put me onto that. It is designed to be cron activated. You can configure it to select directories, and do full and/or incremental compressed tarballs, storing them either locally or on a network server. The default keeps 2 full backups and up to 12 incrementals for a 2 week cycle. Works great. Not too complicated. (less filling?)
