Gentoo is easy to update using portage, and easy to keep track of the software you install, along with everything being optimised for your system, however noted compiling Gentoo from source took me 13.5 hours including Xorg, Qt, KDE 3.3.0 and all the needed deps for these applications/Window systems and I have the specs as noted down in my sig. However going stage two would be faster for you, and should suit a laptop no problem :-) If any assistance on installing Gentoo just e-mail me through my sig, or reply here.
