It occasionally happens when a program is interrupted as you did, that
a file is left behind with the error condition in that file. Every
attempt to run that app thereafter just opens that file and sees the
error and locks up. Look though /etc, /home/<user>, especially
in the hidden files (especially /home/<user>/.kpackage or
kde), /tmp, and /var for files ending in ~, .swp, or something like
that, and delete them. Then try again. I had a similar problem with
login, and found two files in /etc (shadow and password) with such
extensions that prevented login.
