I actually had libpng installed. When I upgraded my system from unstable, version of gtk installed was 2.4.10. For some strange reasons, I did not have libpixbufloader-png.so and libpixbufloader-png.la in /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.4.0/loaders/ directory. I reinstalled gtk, which put these two files in that directory. When I tried gdk-libpixbuf-query-loaders, it did not give any errors, however gdk-libpixbuf-csource still gave errors. Totally frustrated, I downgraded my gtk installation to 2.4.8, and it worked fine. I still do not see few of the icons, but that is not my concern right now. Hope this helps someone.
