Do you mean from a terminal to X11 (Alt+F7 does that), or between 
virtual desktops (in KDE, it's Ctrl+F1, Ctrl+F2 etc. - I don't use 
GNOME, but it's probably the same (check in the Control Panel))

BTW, if it's the first one, remember that to get back to the terminal, 
you need to use /Ctrl/+Alt+F1 etc.
