I've got some more clues. This laptop has a P4 3.2 GHz HT.
In Suse 9.0 it used to install the SMP version of the kernel.

It seems like it's done it here as well, but then, when it
boots, it looks for the 2.6.....-default, not 2.6...-smp
version of the kernel and it can't find the modules.dep

Still don't know how to fix it.
