  I can't help you with your specific question, but it 
does seem the VIA C3 is picky about what kernels it'll 
boot.

  My wife's VIA C3 would not boot from a RH 8 or RH 9 
install CD, but runs RH 7.3 fine, and runs Knoppix 3.4 
fine.  I don't have a clue what the problem is, I just 
moved on to a different CD (kernel) until I found one(s) 
that would work.
