This is kinda like asking "If I want to drive, should I buy a Ford or a 
Chevrolet?".  They will both work great most likely, just depends on
what features you find important. 

Personally, I prefer Slackware, and in fact have it installed on a
P3 600 laptop with 320MB ram and a 12GB HD. I have no problems with
it. 

Debian would likely also work.
