Be sure you are using the "Radeon" driver and not the "ATI" driver. You may need a 2.6 series kernel for this. I am using Debian testing with a 2.6 kernel. I'm not sure about the "framebuffer" stuff, since I am not entirely sure what it is, but I can play 3d Open GL games on my Radeon cards without any difficulties. Radeon 9000s work with the native open source drivers provided with the 2.6 kernel, and I was advised are the best cards available for Linux.
