I cannot imagine what ping would be using, though... I'm thinking defaults are somehow changed or corrupted, but if it's *ping* and Opera... Did you encounter this problem right from the start, or were things working at first? Did you do a new install, or did you preserve your configurations? Sounds almost like a hosts problem, but why would that only affect certain programs, and not others? Maybe have a look at your /etc/hosts file and see whether it has strange things in it... .
