I forgot to mention that this drive was a replacement for a 30GB drive. 
When I moved everything over, I specifically made the first partition 
16MB, and using Beeblebrox (a partition table editor) set its ID to 
Linux /boot. I mad all the other partitions I needed for my Windows 
setup, leaving 40GB set aside for Linux.
