Subj : Getting KInput2 working in Debian (sarge)

Hi,
Does anyone know how to get the kinput2 Japanese input system working in 
Debian? I have a kanji server installed (canna), but adding the usual 
section to my .xsession:

LANG=en.GB_UTF8
export LANG
if type kinput2 &> /dev/null ; then
   kinput2 -canna&
fi
XMODIFIERS=@im=kinput2
export XMODIFIERS

....doesn't work. (My session exits straight away, with no errors in 
..xsession-errors) Is this the wrong way to go about things with Debian 
(it worked fine with my Mandrake and SuSE setups)
