Web browers (netscape, firefox & kongueror) takes around 60M to 80M on average and the top memory hog (kde) takes around 20M to 30M only. That's for a minimum desktop configuration. CPU is not important at all. I am running a KDE/kongueror desktop with 100 MHz speed and 128M memory.
