  If there is no X server already running, then just do
for instance,

xinit $(which netscape)

  This will start netscape directly on top of X.  No
window manager, etc.  Exit Netscape, and you're dropped
back to the term.

  If there's already an X running, then 

xinit $(which netscape) -- :1
