Remember that there is more to the internet than the web, and that unlike windoze, your browser (and ALL other network applications) depends on the kernel handling the networking end of things. So, first look at the output of '/sbin/ifconfig -a' and see that the appropriate interface (eth0 most likely) is up. Next, look at the output of '/sbin/route -n' and see that there is an appropriate network route, and a 'default' route using the ISPs router as the gateway.
