Subj : active ethernet but internet do not work

i am a new linux user and i just installed redhat 9 on my home
computer.  i tried to connect to the internet and at first had an
error that said: "determining ip information for eth0...failed" i then
connected another computer to find the ip address, subnet mask and
gateway and manually put them into the information for the ethernet
address on the linux box.  when i open mozilla and try to connect to
the web, it tells me that 'www.google.com cannot be opened' and a
blank page appears.  i tried to connect to aim using linux's gaim but
it said no connection could be opened.  is there any way for me to get
this comp connected to the net?  any help is appreciated...thanks!
