Subj : DISPLAY vble: problem in Debian linux X To : lubkin From : Saul Lubkin Date : Sat Aug 21 2004 08:33 pm Hi, ALL! I run a 5 computer, Ethernet-connect, network at home -- Intel hardware -- running the latest stable Debian Linux release (woody). Now, for X-windows, running, e. g., DISPLAY=:0.0 xlogo& DISPLAY=:0.0 xlogo& should -- assuming, e.g., that you're xhost commands are right, etc -- run xlogo on the local machine, with the window coming up on Computer X. Doesn't work. E.g., even on the LOCAL machine, running DISPLAY=:0.0 xlogo& -- or DISPLAY=localhost:0.0 xlogo& or various modifications thereof all fail, with the error message "Unable to open display". Running DISPLAY=:0.0 xlogo& -- or just xlogo& xlogo& works instantly. Also, ping localhost (or ), works fine -- all at about the same speed. ?? This problem probably needs a Debian linux guru -- my system has the defualt settings, for a Debian linux woody installation. Thanks a lot!!! .
