first, do you have dhcp on your nic? Sounds like a problem due that.
Second i believe is the framebuffer. Try passing vga=ask in the kernel  
parameters (eg lilo in your case, grub in all other's case).Modify your  
lilo.conf, rerun lilo. If that doesn't work, start a live! cd system (eg  
knoppix or gentoo). Chroot to your installed system, download the kernel  
source wget ftp.kernel.org/2.6/2.6.7.tar.gz or something, untar it and  
compile a new kernel without framebuffer support. Or make you compile in  
your graphich driver somewhere.

Which graphich border is it?

Still, i am only guessing.
