Debian or Mandrake (mandrake doesn't mean the standard install but a  
modified install with mostly development tools, openoffice, firefox,  
fluxbox/icewm).
Another choise (though you won't gaming with that slow machines anyway or  
look in video or so) is FreeBSD which is an amazing operating system.
Another great, fare from *nix is BeOS http://www.bebits.com/
Don't know how experienced you are but there are other systems out their  
working just as well as those i told.
