Thanks.  I mean to install linux and this will help.

Before I do I think that I need to get a backup drive first.  (Why?
This laptop only comes with recovery media that will "take me back to
before I ever touched the computer" and I (educated) guess that
installing linux will shut things down more than once. LOL)

Any suggestions on a backup drive?  Prolly want a kit.  Prolly good in
the USA and in EU (specifically NL). Am in a major USA city at the
moment.
