Subj : Best Distro to test both 2.4 & 2.6 kernels? To : comp.os.linux From : qq11ww22 Date : Mon Aug 09 2004 10:07 pm Hi All, Hopefully not just another "pick a distro for me" question. I'm looking for a newer distro (want all the latest packages) which easily accomodates both 2.4 and 2.6 kernels. I'm testing some drivers and need to see which kernel works best with our hardware. I may need to roll out a large number of systems in a short time, so I would prefer a more user-friendly distro for easy installs, versus a very labor-intensive process like Gentoo. Seems like this request is more difficult than it should be: the latest gccs (3.3.3+) won't compile unpatched vanilla 2.4 kernels, while many of the slightly older distros can be painful to bring up to speed for 2.6 support (eg Mandrake 9.1, RH9.0) I've tried MDK10.1 beta 1, but the distro in general has issues and it is very flaky with anything but the shipped kernel. I've looked at Fedora Core 2, but can't find anyone packaging 2.4 kernels for it (my own patched vanilla 2.4.27 kernels hang on boot). Anyone out there effortlessly switching between 2.4 and 2.6? I'd appreciate a pointer here. Thanks and Regards. .
