There is a lot specific in the configuration of the kernel chipset, ide controller chip and so on, but normally a generic kernel does the job perfect (almost) only that is has a lot more support for diffrent HW. The CPU part is rather important to if you use a new AMD or a new Intel but on older computers a configuration for i486 or even i386 works god enough. read the kernel howto to learn more about it. So normally it would work changing motherboard and cpu. Try and see : ) Micke .
