Subj : Linux CD Replicator To : comp.os.linux From : snorcup Date : Fri Aug 06 2004 02:45 pm Hey guys, how is everyone doing. Me and some of my friends make electronic music, and we want to start making cd's to hand out at clubs. I have seen and used the stand alone cd replicators that are sold on the market today. The one I used was a cdrom drive on top, with 4 target CDR drives. It was stand alone, and had an LCD mounted on top with some simple controlls that allowed you to operate the machine. I would like to build somthing similar myself. I am very familer with the hardware, and the basic configuration needs in linux, but I have some questions about the LCD interface, and how to controll the box with it. My plans were to find a "server" style case, and use 4 scsi burners, with 1 scse DVD drive for the source. I decided DVD because I was under the impresion that DVD drives use a larger buffer. I am assuming that I will need a hard drive, and my plan was for 100 mhz ATA controller with a single Western Digital 80 gig drive. I was also considering serial ATA, but the jury still seems to be out on weather or not this is worth the money at this point. My questions are with linux. What distro is recomended? I have use free bsd in the past when doing network related work, but is there a version in paticular that is smaller, and more suited to doing work like this? On the LCD screen with a touch pad. How do these interface with the PC? I have never used anything like this before, but I am assuming that it goes somthing like assign command x to run when button y is pressed? What is the best cd burning software to use? I do not have much experince burning with linux, I have always just done it on my windows PC (sorry guys :) any help that could be offered would be greatly appreciated. I would also like to post a log of this build, to show how it turns out. I think it will be an interesting project if I can work all the bugs out. Thanks .
