My linux experience is limited to Knoppix, Lindows and Mepis. Knoppix is great - however there is no root user for it, which makes it odd. Lindows, I have never actually used, but got it on sale for $10. Mepis is a very nice distro of linux and (as all linux's [lini?] are) it's getting better. It's a three-in-one Live CD, Installer and Repair disk/iso. I'm not sure if it's self propagated propaganda or honest reporting, (seems right to me) , but many users of other distros laud mepis for it's worthiness above others. http://mepis.org/ The Live Install (Many Disrtos have this wonderfull thing) lets you know right off whether you can boot right into a workable system or punch, kick, apt-get, scream and compile into a workable system. (or fit more suitable hardware.) Mepis 2004.10.2 is the rock that my old machine lives on and 'Simply-Mepis' is the unstable precipice that my new machine treads. (my old homebrewed k7 wears mepis so comfortably, and the new machine had to get major refitting [nvidia %& sb 5.1] 'cuz I's too stupid to force it to work- even knoppix had glitches in the sound with the old hardware) .
