And here are a few more ideas:

1. Just use emacs shell mode instead of an xterm-like application.

2. ls whatever > filename

3. ls whatever | lpr

4. ls whatever | emacsclient

5. ls whatever | your-favorite-text-editor

6. Within emacs, type C-X d.
