I must think of an old dynosaur called IBM, that made it a policy to be able to service ALL programs (binaries) that had *ever* been written for their OS'es, and they did ! When I take an old binary from the 60's, written for OS390 & MVS's predecessor, I can still run it today. In fact, I've had customers running such binaries whilst not even having available the sources from which they were built...
