But I've heard Gnome 2.6 is even slower than Gnome 1.4.

Will upgrading to Gnome 2.6 solve my problem? kernel 2.6? Upgrading
X-CD-Roast? Or is there some other configuration tweaking which I can
do? (I have turned on dma for all drives).
