Subj : Re: Thinking about Linux To : comp.os.linux From : TopDog Date : Wed Jul 21 2004 08:48 am When I first started using linux (-not to long ago...-), I started with Mandrake 9.1, and the first thing I did after installing it, was to buy a book. I bought the -Ultimate Guide to Mandrake Linux- from MandrakeSoft themselves... It came with FedEx 5 days later. That was very usefull for me as a total n00b. The book was about 500 pages big, the first 250 was about the GUI, the applications that came with and how to configure stuff through Mandrake Control Center. Most of this I could have (and did) figured out myself. The next 250 pages was about how linux is buildt up, filestructure, console commands, expressions, etc. etc. This part has proven to be VERY usefull, I still use this part of the book to look up stuff. So I would recommend going with one of the big distro's (SuSE, Mandrake or Fedora). All of these can be downloaded for free. Then buy a book dedicated to that distro. If you go to a bookstore, pick a book you find intuitive, I know there is several books covering Fedora, if you go with Mandrake, the book I talked about is good, and not to expencive to get, even if you don't live in France ;p -- TopDog -The world is going to the dogs...- ------------------------------------------------------------------------ TopDog's Profile: http:/linuxcult.com/forum/member.php?action=getinfo&userid=15869 View this thread: http://linuxcult.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=7137 .
