Basically I'm wondering how easy and reliable it is to have > a linux box connect to a windows box? Our network involves workgroups... > does this complicate matters much? If you know the hostname and the share name, you can do this: mkdir /smb mkdir /smb/ca mount -t smbfs //hostname/ca /smb/ca/ -o username=linonut,gid=disk,fmask=664 where ca is the sharename. If you don't have a DNS server to tell you the IP of hostname, you can put it in /etc/hosts, or wire it in the above directly. You can also put the info above into /etc/fstab. See "man mount" and the section on the smb protocol options. You can also use smbclient. Lots of ways to do it. Now, if you want to browse the shares, instead of mounting a Windows drive, there's more to the story . Oh, you can also set up to use your Windows printer, too. The printtool command is handy for this in Debian, if you're using lprng instead of cups. -- Free as in freedom Power as in empowerment .
