The easiest thing to do is google for
"<the laptop you are interested in>"+"linux".

Unless you're willing to gamble (I've been lucky with both laptops I've owned,
one a no-name from Mitac, and the other a Dell Inspiron 8100), you need to
determine the models of the chipsets for audio, network, video, etc, and see if
there are drivers for all.

If this is too much, then do what the other guy said and check out a source
that sells them preloaded.
