I had the same question, to be honest, but when I upgraded to 2.6.7 from 
2.4.22 (a move from Debian to RedHat and from x86 to x86_64) all has 
gone very smoothly.  All the problem I've had that Ive researched were 
AMD64 specific, mainly due to immature application porting code, not the 
2.6 kernel.

I'd say go for it.
