You might find it easier to set your volume levels once in your mixer (I
use alsamixer) then use whatever volume control knob you have to adjust
the volume when necessary.  I inevitably have to turn the sound up when
playing a video file with mplayer, and turn it back down again when
playing MP3s with xmms.  I use the knob on my speaker to do this, since I
haven't gotten around to enabling the multimedia controls on my keyboard.
