Sounds to me like you are going to use this system to get (more) aquainted with Linux, which in itself is a good idea! Your last setup sounds contains no "dont's" AFAICT. I *do* still wonder about your small-file / large-file distinction. How do you suppose to go about this? Decide everytime: this file goes right, and this one goes left? And on what basis? You litterally *swim* in your dikspace, so what's the point? But further I'd say: go on this way, install it and work with this for a while. When for whatever reason it's not to your liking, just start over with the knowledge you than have. I'd like to second the suggestion that our Star Fleet Admiral made, to spread the swap space over two disks.
