Subj : What if? To : alt.spam, comp.os.linux From : Sweet Anise Date : Sun Jul 11 2004 06:01 pm What if everyone with broadband decided to do exactly what the spammers asked? That is, download their index pages? Since the spammers ask over and over, the hypothetical situation might possibly call for downloading these pages over and over. What if everyone who received a spam from, for instance, lender-home.com (and I use this in the example simply because it's the most recent one that circumvented my spam filters) activated a little script to grab the page a thousand or a few thousand times? What if spammers only stay in business because they make money? What if bandwidth usage became so monumental that spamming began to COST money? Would the hosts of spammer companies begin to charge more? Would they begin to enforce/insert no-spam clauses in their AUPs? $ cat lender-home #! /bin/bash h=http://spam.lender-home.com/? for i in spammer/* do url=$h$i wget $url rm index* done $ cd spammer $ ls jerkwad idiot stupid_spammer stop_spamming_me take_me_off_your_list .... you get the point Would they? .
