Do these "measurements" include buffers/cache or are they subtracted? 
(don't use XOSview)  Right now I'm listed as using 369M (with free), 
however the programs are only actually really using 157M, this is with 
GNOME, Firefox, Thunderbird, Apollon, GAIM, Gnome-terminal and Ryhthmbox 
loaded.  I hope your "measurements" are not with the buffers/cache 
subtracted, 'cause I'd have to ask what else do you load up with your 
windowmanager.

That XFCE, is that XFCE4?  That's a "desktop environment", lower than 
half of the other windowmanagers.
