Challenge yes, and to lern about the 80386 CPU and computer. But Linux 
is _not_ a result of a school project at all.
It started out as a terminalemulation program to connect to Universitys 
computer and access internet.
If you want to know the whole story, I surgest you read "Just for fun" 
by Linus Torvalds and David Daimond.
