Subj : BSD vs. Linux

Dear all,

Could someone elaborate the differences between BSD and Linux?
I am an Unix user (Linux at home, and Solaris at school) though know nothing
about the system admin stuff.
People keep telling me that BSD kernel is better, more stable, and free.

So if the BSD kernel is free and stable why Linus still wrote Linux kernel?
or something to do with the license issue?
