Subj : Default Route To : comp.os.linux From : Shive Date : Thu Jul 08 2004 10:50 pm I am fairly new at Linux (Knoppix/Debian Woody) and am still a long way from even semi guru-ness so I hope this question makes sense. Connected a modem to my PC and went through the setup to get online. It was fairly simple - much simpler than the old Slackware that I sorta started on years ago. Dialed out and connected the first time. Couldn't believe it. (My making it work, that is. Not that Linux worked) However, the handshake goes ok and I connect with my ISP but it will never actually find a URL, nor will the email connect. Lots of surfing (On my cast off Winders laptop, alas, and this broadband work PC) got me the answer of logging in as SU and then issuing a "route del default eth0". After that, I can connect just fine till I power off. Don't quite understand the default route thingie yet, but I will get there with enough reading. My questions... Where is the best/standard/accepted/etc) place to put the route command? Or is there a config file that I need to update? I made a script and then called it as a runlevel startup command. It worked but I have a feeling that my method is a kludge and there is a much better place to fix the problem. Why does the problem? vary by PC? A friend has the same setup (not identical hardware, but the same configuration (modem/ethernet/sound/etc) and we used the same install disks and procedures). His dialed with no route problems. Mine doesn't. Whose machine installed correctly? (This last may be an open ended question along the lines of "My PC doesn't work!!! What's wrong???? Help!!!" Please ignore if so.) Thanks Shive .
