What part is slow?  The initial connection or the transfer rate?  

Check to be sure your hosts are in DNS or /etc/hosts file and check to be
sure your /etc/nsswitch.conf file ('hosts:' section) is configured the way
you need it.  That'll slow down your connections if they're wrong...
