most distros have an option on the login screen to change what GUI is
used. among them is usually an option for a "failsafe" GUI. This GUI
isn't really much of a GUI at all, it gives you no background image,
but has a console interface, which can start GUI programs. almost like
the failsafe from the bootloader, except this allows you to use
GUI-based programs.
