Subj : X pointer messed up

Hello all
I used GNOME for a while, then decided to try something else again.  I noticed
that my mouse cursor was acting strangely, keeping the shapes from GNOME.
For example, I tried using udm, but instead of the usual cursor I got a little
white "x".  In fvwm, the pointer is white instead of the usual black.  How 
could I switch everything back the way it was?  If it helps, I am running
Debian unstable.
