Looks like I found the culprit.

tools -> cookie manager -> manager stored cookies

Under Cookie Sites was listed dir.yahoo.com and probably a couple of
others.  I selected remove all sites and now I can check my email in linux
once again.

I guess mozilla keeps a record of all sites you refuse cookies to.  Even
if you change your options to allow all cookies, it still adheres to the
rules previously set for already visited sites.  Unless you clear this
section.
