Subj : What facility (syslog) to use for logging from routers? To : alt.os.linux,comp.os.linux From : bob niederman Date : Sat Jul 03 2004 04:13 pm Right now I'm logging from our ~70 devices to local7 on a linux box. I note that this conflicts with the boot log in /etc/syslog.conf: local7.* /var/log/boot.log This causes the output of dmesg to contain lots of router stuff. Aside from not choosng anything already referenced in syslog.cong, what is the facility last likely to conflict with other (not yet configured) apps? example: I started googling around and found advice to configure LDAP to local4. Is there any way to know what other facilities "typically" get used, local3 and/or local5 in particular? Redhat 9 and/or RHEL 3 are likely targets. .
