Subj : Avi to mpeg?

Hi all.
I'm new to this with film on the computer, so I have a few questions to ask.
Since most tv devices and digital cameras saves all movies in .avi a format
that I don't like to use since it doesn't go with VCD format.

What I need is a program or a script that can convert .avi to .mpeg format.
Is there anyone that knows about this? 
I have searched and found lot's of them for Windows. I use Slackware 9.1 on
my comp. and don't want to install something that doesn't work properly
just to fix my homevideos.
