There are various obvious options at this point: 1) spend money ($5 on up) on a sound card that's known to work, 2) come back later, 3) give up, 4) get to a command line and start pounding away with esoteric incantations obtained by googling on ALSA and AD1980, 5) try another distribution just in case (thank goodness they're freely downloadable). If "I just want it to work" is the key phrase, 5 and 1 are where to start. If "I enjoy solving esoteric technical problems for no pay" is the key phrase, start with 4. .
