Subj : password Problems

I am an pretty experienced debian user, but when installing on a
friend's computer I ran into a problem.  We went through the install
fine, but when we came to the first logon prompt it rejected all of our
attempts to log in, whether with root or with the other user name.  We
are pretty certain that we have at least one of the passwords correct,
if not both.  Regardless, it keeps on rejecting them.  What could be
causing this/how may it be corrected?
