May i recommend you Gentoo (www.gentoo.org)? Gentoo is some kind of Linux from scratch based distribution bundled with an excellent packages manager (portage) and an nice manual. It's light, fast, easy to administrate, and can be installed by anyone following the manual step by step (rare ;) ) The only drawback is u'll have to compile everything (portage manages your compilations easily), it means your os will probably take days to be up and ready, but it will result a significant performance gain that could be appreciated on this kind of machine ;) /Cif! .
